The
newsletter of the Cambridge Fire Department
A "Hose
line" is a fire service term for any fire hose used for
fire attack. Fire hoses come in various sizes and the larger
the fire the more "Hose lines" you will encounter
in the street. Larger fires with many hose lines are dynamic,
exciting places to be. There is a lot going on there.
We hope that you find a lot going on here as far as fire department
information is concerned.
The
banner name that we use for our newsletter was coined in the
1970's by Dave Dugan, a firefighter with the CFD. There was
a great amount of comings and goings of local characters at
the old fire department headquarters and this was a form of
entertainment for the fire fighters. Eventually a log was kept
of these meanderings and visits and everyone could keep abreast
of the current adventures. The log was finally stopped when
it turned slightly malicious.
It
is with regrets that we announce the death of Fire Chief Thomas
"Ed" Hockenberry, one of the well-known original paid
members of the fire department.
Fire
Chief Thomas "Ed" Hockenberry

Fire
Chief Hockenberry joined the Cambridge Fire Department in 1946
as one of the original paid members. Before that time the force
had a paid fire chief and drivers and was supplemented by volunteer
firefighters. He worked his way through all ranks on the department.
Chief Hockenberry served from 1946 until 1977. He was remembered
for his leadership and support of the firefighters under his command.
Under his oversight the department attained modern fire apparatus
and the current fire station. He will be remembered and missed
by many.
It
is again with regret that the department announces the death of
former Assistant Fire Chief Fred Steele Sr. Assistant Fire Chief
Steele was a 30-year veteran of the department.

Chief Fred Steel
