The
newsletter of the Cambridge Fire Department
A "Hose
line" is a fire service term for any fire hose used for
fire attack. Fire hoses come in various sizes and the larger
the fire the more "Hose lines" you will encounter
in the street. Larger fires with many hose lines are dynamic,
exciting places to be. There is a lot going on there.
We hope that you find a lot going on here as far as fire department
information is concerned.
The
banner name that we use for our newsletter was coined in the
1970's by Dave Dugan, a firefighter with the CFD. There was
a great amount of comings and goings of local characters at
the old fire department headquarters and this was a form of
entertainment for the fire fighters. Eventually a log was kept
of these meanderings and visits and everyone could keep abreast
of the current adventures. The log was finally stopped when
it turned slightly malicious.
Pre-
Fire Planning
If
you have logged on to our web site to pick up some additional
information about pre-fire planning, here's the latest.
Pre-fire planning allows firefighters to have some advance knowledge
of your building and its construction features. This knowledge
allows firefighters to be better prepared when there is a problem
within your business or building such as a fire, flood or other
disaster.
Pre-fire
planning is different from fire inspections in the fact that we
are not looking for fire hazard violations. We simply need the
outside measurements of the building, the utility locations, the
location of doors and any other special information that gives
us the "head start" that we need to get ahead of the
emergency. Any information that we receive is logged in book form
and studied by fire officers and crews. When an emergency happens
we then have advanced information that has been reviewed and can
also be brought to the scene of the emergency if needed.
Any
information that we receive is greatly appreciated by your firefighters.
We are here to assist you in all your fire protection needs. If
you have any additional questions please feel free to contact
us by going to the "Contact us"
section of our web site.
