This is the firefighters position on the drivers side of the engine. Out in the cold and wet! The firefighter has to sit beside the diesel engine. They have a SCBA breathing cylinder in the seat and a hand light and small tools nearby. Newer trucks have totally enclosed cabs for the firefighters.
