Indiana hose and chemical engine
In
October 1915, the Cambridge Fire Department received its
first piece of motorized fire equipment. The combination
hose wagon and chemical engine was built on a Indiana Truck
Company cab and chassis. We think that the fire body was
manufactured by the Sutphen Corporation of Columbus, Ohio.
The truck carried two 40-gallon chemical tanks, a 40-foot
extension ladder and 600-feet of hose. This apparatus proved
to be only a moderate success as it was under powered and would
throw its drive chains leaving it without brakes. On October
25th of the same year it was involved in a collision with
a city street car while responding to an alarm and Fire
Chief C.C. Long was injured. The truck saw service for several
years and its fate is unknown.
