Sutphen Custom pumper
In
1974 fire officials made plans to replace the 1952 Mack pumper
with a new custom cab pumper. Maxim fire apparatus and the Sutphen
Corporation were the bidders on the truck. As can be seen from
the photo, the Sutphen Corporation delivered a new Custom cab
pumper in 1975. This truck was the first modern enclosed-style
cab truck that the department purchased and the luxury of riding
in the semi-open rear seats with a SCBA tank handy was nice. As
can be seen by the rear windscreen, firefighters were still allowed
to ride the rear tailboard. This apparatus was equipped with a
Hale 1250-gpm pump, a 750-galllon tank and carried 1000 feet of
2 and 1/2-inch supply line. It also had what was considered improved
storage areas. The truck was equipped with a Cummins 903 diesel
engine with automatic transmission and its unique exhaust note
was easily heard on the fireground. In an interesting detail the
truck was delivered with sanders at the rear wheels. The
bell on the front bumper was from the 1923 Reo pumper and was
rechromed and added to the truck, a tradition that exists today
on the first-out city engine. This apparatus served very well
for the department throughout the years and was involved in operations
at many major fires. It later was equipped with 5-inch supply
line and larger attack lines.
In
the late 1990's it was replaced with a new engine and was sold
to the Liberty Community fire department.
