Seagrave Special pumper
The
city of Cambridge decided in 1928 to update the fire department's
apparatus roster when it agreed to purchase a pumper from the
Seagrave Company of Columbus, Ohio and a Prospect ladder truck
from the Prospect Fire Engine Company of Prospect, Ohio. The Seagrave
pumper arrived on May 18th, 1928 and was known as a Seagrave "Special"
the difference being a larger or special size engine. It was one
of six produced by Seagrave. It was known as a 6 A.T. model and
carried serial number #52810. The cost of the apparatus was $6,500
dollars. The vehicle had a 600-gallon per-minute pump, carried
1300-feet of hose and was equipped with ladders and other tools.
The truck was beautifully painted with gold leaf striping with
a painted scene of the double covered bridge on the hood. This
pumper was the first-out engine for the fire department for many
years and was retired and given to the local Shriners in the late
1960's. It was re-engined with a Chevrolet six cylinder engine
and was used at functions for a while. As of 2005 the department
has learned that this truck is located at a private residence
near Cedar Point, Ohio.
